Be wound[wuːnd] tight:If someone is “tightly wound”, they are stressed out and may overreact very easily. They may be very tense, anxious and highly reactive.(形容箭拨弩张、一触即发的那种紧张和焦躁)
E.G.1:Bree:I mean, how in the world could anybody accuse me of murder? –- Edie:Well, you are wound pretty tight. (DHS02E05)
E.G.2:Mike:So is, uh, Rex gone for good? I don’t know. – Susan:God, I hope not. I mean, they’ve always been wound a little tight. (DHS01E03)
People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones/soda cans:
People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”
还是Susan学得熟:“Who am I to judge?”
Get past sth:To be able to stop something from affecting you, upsetting you, or influencing you.
Boot camp:A military training camp for new recruits, with very harsh discipline.
同时Mike此前还说道:“Well, maybe he did you a big favor”,是在暗示:或许她跟Karl离婚并不见得是件坏事,因为:最美好的事物还在抵达的途中。(“The best is yet to come”– Bree said to Rex in Season 01 Final Episode)
It seems that this label, An Eligible Bachelor, attached to Mike doesn’t fell short of what was advertised.
(Analogy):
E.G.1:Life is a journey. One that is much better traveled with a companion by our side. But sometimes, we lose our companions along the way. And then the journey becomes unbearable. (DHS01E19)
E.G.2:Suburbia is a battle ground, an arena for all forms of domestic combat. Husbands clash with wives, parents cross swords with children. But the bloodiest battles often involve women and their mothers-in-law. (DHS01E06)
Sneak a peek[piːk]:Sneak a look/glance/peek:To look at something quickly and secretly.
For what it’s worth:If you add for what it’s worth to something that you say, you are suggesting that what you are saying or referring to may not be very valuable or helpful.
Drop the act:Stop pretending
E.G.1:You can just drop the act. I know what’s going on. (Friends 05E07)
E.G.2:Okay, you know what? Drop the act. I know you gave them cookies.(DH S01E03)
E.G.3:You can drop the act. You only helped me get this job because you needed a spy.(DH S05E17)
Crack:To crush(cookies, coconuts, etc.)into small pieces.(咬碎、碾碎,比如嗑瓜子饼干)
Retaliate[rɪ’tælieɪt]:To hurt someone or do something harmful to someone because they have done or said something.
Revelation[ˌrevə’leɪʃn]:The act of making people aware of something that has been secret.
Bottom line:(首要考虑、重大关切;最终出价、底线价;财务盈亏、净利润)
1、The deciding or crucial factor; The essential point in a discussion or an argument;
E.G.:Bottom line, I miss our life. I miss shopping. All I have to look forward to is the occasional invitation to a fancy party. (Gaby said to Carlos in DH S05E02)
2、the final offer someone will accept;
E.G.:If this is really your bottom line, then you’re gonna have to try… and give me a reason, aside from your mother, that I can relate to. (SATC S06E01)
3、The final line on a company’s accounting statement that shows profit or loss.(企业当期利润总额减去所得税后的金额,即企业的税后利润。)
E.G.:Working at a fashion magazine, day and night. And for what? A paycheck? A meager percentage of some dwindling bottom line? (UB S04E16)
Storm out:To burst out of some place angrily.
Trouble in paradise[‘pærədaɪs]:An unexpected problem in a supposedly positive situation, especially in a marital or romantic relationship.
Some:Used to express a positive or negative opinion about sb/sth.
E.G.1:That was some party!
E.G.2:That was some tough women.
Tear down:To completely remove or demolish something.
Motor lodge[lɒdʒ]:Motor hotel (汽车旅馆)
